Wolfe Law Goes Green

earthinhands The New Orleans, LA and Seattle, WA boutique construction firm, Wolfe Law Group, announced today its WLG Goes Green Initiative, designed to meet their conservation goals and those of their clients with more environmentally conscious practices.

The legal field is not an easy place to be utilize environmentally friendly practices, as its extraordinarily paper-oriented. Wolfe Law Group, however, who opened it’s doors to a second office in SODO earlier this month, announced that they are taking unprecedented steps to “go green” in 2008.

While in recent days there are many businesses “going green,” law firms have been a bit slower to make the leap.

“Our industry has some challenges in ‘going green,’ and most of them revolve around paper. We go through reams and reams of paper, and the small difference in cost between regular and recycled paper can make a real difference in your bottom line at the end of year,” explains Scott Wolfe, founder of Wolfe Law Group. “We work hard to run a paperless office, which allows us to use much less paper than your everyday firm. We, therefore, can justify the difference in cost and print only on recycled materials.”

Not only does Wolfe Law Group recycle and use recycled paper products, and work in a paperless practice, but they have adopted an ambitious plan that also includes enforcing a plastics-free policy on beverages, utilizing energy efficient light bulbs and more.

“We’re conscious,” says Doug Reiser, head attorney in the Seattle office. “We take steps everyday to conserve according to our plans, and then to continue evolving our environmental practices.”

Wolfe Law Group Opens Doors in SODO, Joins SODO Business Association

Wolfe Law Group is happy to announce it has opened the doors to its new full-time office in the SODO Business District of Seattle, WA. Wolfe Law Group becomes the first legal practice to establish a presence in the area, a traditionally industrial district, and is the only law firm in SODO focused on serving the construction industry. “We’re very excited about opening and serving the SODO community,” says Scott Wolfe, founding partner of the firm. “The neighborhood has a great energy, and we’re looking forward to being part of the ongoing changes here.”

The community, in fact, has changed over the past ten years, transitioning from a pure industrial area to a new mixed community ushered in by the opening of the Starbucks Center, Quest Field and Safeco Field.

In furtherance of the firm’s commitment to the area, it has also joined the SODO Business Association, an organization serving the agenda of the 50,000 employees and 2,000 businesses within SODO.

“It’s a natural fit for Wolfe Law Group,” says Doug S. Reiser, an attorney heading the firm’s new office. “Seattle has one of the country’s most prominent construction markets, and the center of that market is right here in SODO. This office is accessible to the construction industry and our clients.” Wolfe Law Group was founded in post-Katrina New Orleans, and only recently expanded to Seattle. “Our roots are important,” says Scott Wolfe, a New Orleans native. “We have some gut-wrenching background from the post-Katrina experience, which really cut this firm’s teeth. As we face the sub-prime concern here in Seattle, and a potential drop in construction numbers for the first time in years, our firm can bring real-world emergency experience to the table to deliver creative alternatives and results.”

“Aside from our unique experience and offerings, we think there is something really innovative about this new law office,” says Reiser. “Our firm focuses entirely on construction law, and we’re the first to come straight into SODO, the heart of Seattle’s construction market.” The 2000 square foot space is located at 3232 First Ave South, just steps away from the SODO Deli and A2T Graphics. The firm has construction lawyers practicing in New Orleans, LA and Seattle, WA. Our practice focuses on serving the construction industry and the parties involved with construction projects.

Holiday Trip and Community Initiative

earthinhands
To cap off 2007 and celebrate the holiday season, the staff at Wolfe Law Group’s New Orleans office made a holiday trip to Seattle to view the new office and have some fun.

“This trip was important for our office workers in New Orleans who have worked so hard to support the new Seattle venture,” says Scott Wolfe, founding partner of the firm. “On the flip side, our Seattle staff was excited to see the new faces and support, and was in need of the short break.”

Wolfe Law Group plans to take a similar trip each year to celebrate the prior days and discuss the future.

The trip began on Friday, December 14th, when office staff from both New Orleans and Seattle spent the morning and afternoon volunteering at the North Pole for the Forgotten Children’s Fund. The charity is an institution in Seattle, and organizes the distribution of Christmas gifts to children from less fortunate families. We spent the day selecting and wrapping gifts for families.

The Forgotten Children’s Fund event was the firm’s first “Volunteer Day.” The practice is currently coordinating with local charities in New Orleans and Seattle to establish a volunteer program, whereby our staff will volunteer for one paid workday per month. We hope to announce the dedicated day and the participating charities in January 2008.

Seattle Construction Attorneys with Post-Katrina Experience Issue Top Ten Ways to Avoid Scams

Wolfe Law Group, a construction boutique firm on First Avenue in SoDo, can offer something special to the residents of Western Washington in the aftermath of its devastating floods: post-disaster legal experience.

Prior to opening its doors in Seattle earlier this year, the firm practiced exclusively out of its New Orleans office, and weathered the economic and social twists and turns of the post-Katrina era.

Today, the firm published a “Top Ten” list of ways to avoid construction scams, and with first hand knowledge and recent memory echoes the WA Attorney General’s warning to residents to beware of post-catastrophe scam-artists.

“Sadly, victims of widespread disasters have to pay close attention to this,” said Scott Wolfe, founding partner of the firm. “From our experience in New Orleans, the affected residents get put in tight financial spots during the post-disaster period, and are particularly vulnerable to scams.”

Doug Resier, an attorney in the firm’s Seattle office, highlights that there’s no shortage on those willing to take advantage of the vulnerable.

“A lot of people see the billions of dollars being poured into a disaster area and rush in to take their share,” said Reiser. “After Katrina, thousands came into the area to capitalize on the rebuilding work. In fact, we found there were many people who spent their lives chasing disasters and the quick cash that could be made by catching victims off guard.”

The firm published an article on its blog with some insight as to why disaster victims are vulnerable to construction scams, how they happen and how to avoid them. A list of the “Top Ten” ways to avoid a construction scam is included in the article, and the list, without its notes, is reproduced at the bottom of this release.

“In post-Katrina New Orleans, our firm has represented hundreds of homeowners, contractors, architects and engineers in projects of all shapes and sizes to help residents rebuild their lives,” said Wolfe. “Unfortunately, a poorly informed decision can cost a victim further heartache, expense and delay. Our advice to victims is to take a deep breath before hiring a contractor, do some research, and hire experienced counsel.”

How to Avoid Construction Scams
Top Ten Red Flags and Tips

1. If the price is too good to be true, it probably is.
2. Don’t let your contractor find you, find your contractor.
3. A permit is not a license, insurance is not a license. A license is a license.
4. Be weary of unstructured payment plans, and upfront deposits.
5. Nothing good can come from dealing in cash.
6. Contractors who promise to work with your insurance company or promise to get you insurance proceeds are likely pulling a scam.
7. Insurance Certificate copies do not always equal insurance coverage, and Insurance will not cover poor workmanship and/or work defects.
8. If your contractor doesn’t want to get a building permit, he might not be a contractor.
9. You should get a written contract, and the contract should be more than an “estimate” or “invoice.”
10. Hiring an attorney is a prudent investment.

Douglas Reiser was born and raised in a small rural town in Northeastern Ohio. Later he attended the College of Wooster, where he was a college athlete, and was awarded a B.A. in Political Science. Upon graduating from college, Doug left his native state to attend law school at Loyola University in New Orleans, LA. The grandson of an entrepreneurial attorney, Doug gained an early respect for the practice of law. Once given the opportunity to gain experience in the field, Doug spent time working with both large firms and solo practitioners. Doug has worked in the legal field in Cleveland, OH, New York, NY, New Orleans, LA and now Seattle, WA.

Doug also spent time working for the New York City Council’s Office of General Counsel in the Infrastructure Division. There he drafted and litigated legislation impacting residential and commercial builders.

Prior to joining the Wolfe Law Group in December of 2006, Doug, an avid sports fan, worked in Media Relations, writing stories on player development for the current day Triple AAA affiliate of the New York Mets, the New Orleans Zephyrs.

Scott Wolfe an Alumni Spotlight at Loyola Law School

The Career Services office at Loyola New Orleans College of Law recognized Scott Wolfe in its monthly “Alumni Spotlight” feature.

The short profile can be found at the Career Services website, or by clicking here. The text is reproduced below:

The son and grandson of New Orleans contractors and entrepreneurs, Scott is no stranger to starting his own business. So it came as no surprise that immediately following his 2005 Loyola graduation, Scott would open his own law practice focusing on construction and business law and counseling.

In less than two years, Wolfe Law Group has grown from a solo practice to a six-person office, and currently has full-time offices in both New Orleans, LA and Seattle, WA. In 2006, Scott became the youngest person and the youngest attorney to ever get selected by New Orleans City Business magazine as a “Leadership in Law” honoree. He repeated the honor in 2007, and in fact, has yet to practice law without being recognized as one of the Top 50 attorneys in the New Orleans Metro Area.

As an attorney, Scott has brokered more than 2.5 million in settlements of Hurricane Katrina claims, and has an active client base of contractors and businesses numbering more than 150.

A native of New Orleans, Scott’s business experience began in 1998 while still a student at Brother Martin High School, where he founded The Web Lab – a web design and programming firm. The Web Lab is still in business ten years later, with a strong client base and a subsidiary company currently developing web-based applications for contractors and lawyers.

In May 2007, The Web Lab was influential in helping Scott launch another business, ExpressLien.com. ExpressLien.com is a web-based service whereby contractors and material suppliers can lien non-paying construction projects for a fraction of the cost and time involved with hiring an attorney. The website welcomed more than 1000 visitors in its first 30 days online.
